Skype Releases Version 2.5 and Introduces Skypecasting and SMSSkype 2.5 is now available for download and with it you get these exciting new features:
SkypecastingThis is Skype's version of podcasting, a kind of real time blogging event with audio. Skype says that Skypecasting is "live, moderated conversations allowing groups of up to 100 people from anywhere in the world to talk to one another". In a Skypecast, people can discuss any topic or shared interest, such as gardening or political views. For example, if you have a passionate interest in tomato gardening, you can host a Skypecast that invites anyone with a similar hobby to participate. Skypecasts are moderated by the ‘host’ who can mute, eject or pass the virtual microphone to participants when they wish to speak. To host or participate in a Skypecast, you must have a Skype account, but the cost is completely free. Non-Skype users can only participate through a Skype user who has a SkypeIn number. The Skype user creates a conference call, and allows people to phone in to that number. Skypecasting in this release is a preview so expect some imperfections. SMSSMS (text messaging) has been a happening feature in the cell phone world for some time now. With Skype 2.5, you can send a text message to Skype contacts who have added their mobile numbers to their profile, or to any mobile phone that has SMS enabled. You need to buy Skype credits to send SMS messages. The rates are around 10 to 11 cents per minute. Currently you cannot send SMS messages the other way - mobile phone to Skype user.
