The Quick Start Guide to VOIP for the Home |
New PhoneGnome 2.0 Gives you Three Ways to Make Free CallsIn its biggest update since launching at the beginning of 2006, PhoneGnome makes it easier than ever to make free calls. If you didn’t already know, the original PhoneGnome is a playing card size device that plugs into your landline and into your Internet router. Installing the thing really isn’t more complicated than that. Making calls to other landlines and cell phones works like normal, and calling other PhoneGnome users is a free Internet call.
Basically, PhoneGnome can automatically detect when it’s making an Internet or PSTN call. In fact, unlike other voice over IP solutions, PhoneGnome requires a landline to work. You don’t need to get a new phone number, or transfer your old one. PhoneGnome 2.0 makes making free Internet calls, or inexpensive long distance or international calls even easier AND cheaper. First, they’ve lowered the price of the original PhoneGnome box to $59.00. This price point is way more affordable to the average consumer looking for savings in long distance. For example, if you buy one, and then send a second PhoneGnome to a relative in say, India you can call anytime for as long as you want for free. Both you and the other party keep the regular phone number and landline, but the free call goes over the Internet. The second addition to PhoneGnome service for those of you who don’t want to buy the device. It’s called PhoneGnome Web. PhoneGnome Web connects two phones: landline, mobile, cable, or VOIP phones regardless of whether the parties are connected to the Internet or not. All you need is a free PhoneGnome account and you’re ready to make calls. What happens is you initiate a call from your myPhoneGnome web page, then YOUR phone rings, you pick up and wait to be connected to the other party. It sounds a bit different, but it’s really no big deal. PhoneGnome is just using the Internet to connect the two parties. There’s no software to install and you use your regular phone. If you’re calling other PhoneGnome users, the calls are always free. If you want to call regular landline numbers or cell phones, low cost calling rates apply. The third big update is that they’ve made the softphone option a free feature of PhoneGnome. A softphone is software you install on your computer the lets you make and receive calls. This feature is for those of you who are glued to your computer most of the time and want to take advantage of “click-to-call”. That’s when you click a phone number on your online contact list, and the software dials the number for you. You need a headset and microphone to make this work. Check out the PhoneGnome website for more information, or to give the service a try. As already mentioned, a PhoneGnome account is free. Free is always good!
